If you ever needed proof that the mainline media is virtually indistinguishable from the celebrity gossip machine and the likes of the National Enquirer, People Magazine, and Hollywood Lies (Life), well here it is. A recent post from the venerable 105 year old news organization, United Press International (UPI), provides proof of the demise of the mainline media. UPI was once one of the top two newswires services that provided news story content to thousands of newspapers across the nation and the world.
At its peak, UPI had more than 2,000 full-time employees; and 200 news bureaus in 92 countries; it had more than 6,000 media subscribers. But with the rise of television news, UPI began to decline. In 1982 it was sold by E.W. Scripps, its original owner, and thereafter suffered through a couple of bankruptcies before eventually be bought in 2000 by News World Communications, a news media company founded by Unification Church Sun Myung Moon. So let’s take a look at one of its latest blog headlines:
Kristen Stewart “Excited” About a Rupert Sanders-free “Snow White” Sequel
Published: Dec. 23, 2012 at 10:59 AM
By KATE STANTON, UPI.com
Reading the headline, I am sure that we were all looking forward to reading about how excited Kristen Stewart is about the fact that the weasel Rupert Sanders will not be connected to the project. Wrong. Take a look at the story that followed:
Kristen Stewart is back for a sequel to “Snow White and the Huntsman,” sans Rupert Sanders.
Despite earlier rumors that Kristen Stewart’s indiscretions with her married “Snow White and the Huntsman” director, Rupert Sanders, had gotten her booted from the franchise, the 22-year-old actress has confirmed that she’ll return for another stab at her Snow White character. But she won’t have to worry about what would have made for an awkward workplace environment — Sanders won’t be returning to the sequel. According to the Daily Mail, Sanders is desperately trying to save his marriage to model-actress Liberty Ross.
Stewart, meanwhile, is pretty enthusiastic.
“Oh, it’s gonna be f***in’ amazing. No, I’m so excited about it, it’s crazy,” Stewart told Indiewire.
“The other day I said that there was a strong possibility that we’re going to make a sequel, and that’s very true, but everyone was like, ‘Whoa, stop talking about it’. So no, I’m totally not allowed to talk about it,” she added.
In typical celebrity gossip machine style, UPI has merged Kristen’s excitement for the sequel with it’s assertion via the Daily Mail that Sanders won’t be returning, creating a false impression in its headline that Kristen is excited that Sanders isn’t returning. When there isn’t even any official confirmation that Rupert Sanders isn’t returning. Why? Because Kristen Stewart sells and she sells even more when you take her words and misrepresent them.
Lies, innuendo, references to shoddy sources, misrepresentation, unnamed, unidentified sources: all tools of the celebrity gossip machine. This is what the Twenty First Century News Media and even UPI has become: a corrupt, lazy purveyor of nonsense and fantasy based on the need to titillate to gain web hits and advertising dollars. Desperate trying to survive and remain relevant.
The celebrity gossip machine created this so called “cheating scandal” and the only way it will be defeated is to expose this scandal for what it is: the product of a corporate “fourth estate” that is in desperate need of reform.
You can start with a little dose of the truth. See The Grand Punk series on this site. And be careful what you read in the mainline media. It rarely is what it appears to be.
And pass this story on. Tweet at will.
